Research in current production systems (Horizon 1)
Research focused on improving the current almond production system that dominates existing plantings. Current system based on Californian varieties and technologies.
Mildura SmartFarm Almond Experimental Orchard
The Mildura SmartFarm almond experimental orchard is a platform for research and innovation into the management of current, and the design of next generation planting systems. The following almond industry strategies are addressed through research conducted in statistically robust research plantings.
- Evaluation of higher density planting systems
- Shake-and-catch harvesting
- Resource inputs
- Water
- Nitrogen
- Evaluation of AgTech
The research platform was established by the Victorian Government as part of ST16001 – Advanced production systems for temperate nuts with co-investment from DAFF (previously known as DAWE) through the Rural Research Development for Profit Program. The project was administered by Horticulture Innovation Australia.
Additional investment was provided by the Agriculture Infrastructure and Jobs Fund, Agriculture Victoria’s SmartFarm Initiative, Victoria’s On-Farm Internet of Things Trial and Agriculture Victoria’s Smart Traceability Design and Innovation program.
